For tracing the progress of, and staying up with, the high end of computer graphics, the annual proceedings of ACM SIGGRAPH are hard to beat. Even their web site is a rich resource for learning about the field.

There are two sections to this document. The first section is dedicated to schools that Pixar feels caters to technical direction. The second section, on the other hand, caters to the more artistic field of character animation.
