Angela
from Disney's Gargoyles
Started: 1997
Appearances: Gathering 1997
Angela was my first real attempt at cosplay. With the help of my mother and her sewing machine we created the first Angela costume (as far as I know.) Angela is a gargoyle, Goliath's daughter, from Disney's animated series, Gargoyles. Since I got onto the internet back when the show first aired, I went as the alias "Angela" so when I decided to go to the first Gargoyles Convention (The Gathering '97) it seemed fitting to make a costume of her.
Here are a few photos of my Angela costume. I appologize for the poor quality, the costume really looks better in person. (and none show my widdle toes!)
Angela had soft-sculpture feet that fit over the top of my shoes. She had soft-sculpture wing-arms, sculpted out of light purple panty-hose stuffed with cotton. Attached to these "arms" was some heavy black slightly reflective fabric that had a bit of a leathery look to it. This was lined with the same fabric in purple to create the dual-colored look of gargoyle wings. This double-lined fabric cut into the shape of a bat-like wing and attached onto the "wing-arms" created a caped wing that could be easily worn over my outfit. The tail was also soft-sculptured panty-hose.
The outfit itself was fairly simple and was made without a pattern. At the time I was a little concerned about showing too much leg, so there was a small flap of purple fabric inbetween the side laces to make Angela's outfit just a tad more modest. I wore light purple panty-hose to color my legs, and also wore them on my arms. I cut the ends out of the panty-hose, painted them with anti-run liquid and made a hole to fit my middle finger into to hold the hose down my arm. This was a pretty good effect and was easy to put on.
Angela's ears and browridge were created by cutting apart a Goliath mask that I bought in a halloween store. In retrospect I wish I had kept an intact version of that mask, seeing as it is very rare now, and was very well sculpted. I simply cut the face off the bottom of the mask and it formed a perfect and durable ear and horn-ridge set. I then sewed a large black wig onto the top of the Goliath mask. Angela's hair however is much larger than this (it's very similar to Jasmine's hair in Disney's Aladdin.) So I went to Sally's Beauty Saloon Supply and bought two black hair extensions (cheap ones) and attached them to the bottom of my black wig. I then separated the wig and extensions into sections like Angela's.
One problem was though, that the eyeridge tended to slip over lopsided for some reason, and was a bit of a hassle all night to see! I'm not sure how to rectify this.
I added two huge gold-like hoop earrings to the ears of the mask and an elastic band to the bottom of the jaw to hold it down. This proved to be problematic however when wearing the mask, as the hair was SO heavy that it would pull the mask back on my head making it harder for me to see out of it. I was pulling and adjusting it frequently when wearing it. Also the elastic did not match the mask, which was an oversight.
I painted my hands and face with purple face paint and painted my fingernails purple as well, and the illusion was complete.
The costume won first place at the Gathering '97. (there weren't that many costumes there! :) ) I've since learned ALOT more though about costume making!
