Here is the replica I made of Momoko’s black and white Baby, the Stars Shine Bright Kamikaze Girls dress.
Today I’m officially 28 weeks (7 months) pregnant with twin girls! Just starting 3rd trimester, hurray! To celebrate I wore the new Kamikaze Girls dress I made. Kamikaze Girls is still one of my favorite movies and love Momoko’s wardrobe in it.
More photos and construction information after the cut.
I made this Kamikaze Girls dress to be a comfy Gothic Lolita style dress that I could wear during pregnancy. It’s based heavily on the Baby, the Stars Shine Bright one that Momoko wears in the Kamikaze Girls (2004 Shimotsuma Monogatari) movie (screenshot below).
I wore my new handmade version today to have tea with two of my friends.
It’s a really comfortable dress since it has elastic at the back and the straps and it’s very free from the empire waist. The construction is pretty easy as the skirt is just a big rectangle gathered into the waist. You could use almost any princess seamed sloper or pattern that fits you well to get a head start on this dress’s bodice. Most of the lace is just applied on top except the collar and hem laces. The black ribbons are laced up the front through openings in the white lace.
I chose a medium weight soft cotton from Michael Levine’s and cluny lace from various LA Fabric district stores.
The back piece with elastic running through it is just a rectangle. The straps are just rectangles hemmed in lace. There’s a side zipper.
Detail on the skirt hem lace.
It’s super hot today, and I’m not allowed to wear heels or anything too crazy right now, so I kept the coordination basic. The purse is Angelic Pretty, shoes Naturalizer, necklace Disney Couture, bolero HMHM (taobao), black velvet vintage hat.
Adorbs! I could live in empire dresses in the summer. What’s great about the cut is you can wear it post-pregnancy too.
Definitely can wear them post pregnancy! Thanks!
You look amazing 😉
Thankyou!
You make pregnancy look fabulous and so cute! Biggest congratulations.
You most definitely look better than your inspiration! Great creativity you have there. When it comes to maternal clothing, women should always go for clothes that they feel most comfortable and fabulous in. Brands do not even matter because this is a time where comfort just has to chunk everything else because of the unborn baby in your tummy.
OMG you look too cute! I love that look! Congratulations! xoxoxo
