Disney’s Beauty and the Beast was the reason that I wanted to be an animator. I also really loved Belle. On top of this I saw the original cast Broadway version when I was in high school with my dad. I waited for a very long time to finally tackle Belle’s Ballgown Costume. I guess you could say it’s my dream costume.
I had a lot of fun picking out the fabrics to use for Belle’s Ballgown costume. There are several versions of the ballgown depending on which production you look at, so I gave myself relatively free reign to pick what fabrics and details I wanted or didn’t want.
The bodice was drafted over my trusty selfmade Laughing Moon Victorian corset. The muslin is modified from Simplicity 4479 (Phantom of the Opera Masquerade pink gown). The fabric is gold beaded and sequined lace overlayed on interfaced gold lame. This was flatlined on coutil and then the seam allowances boned and the whole thing lined. The same lace used to overlay the bodice was also used as trim lace, and layers of scalloped lace over the puffed sleeves. The puff sleeves are layers of a transparent pale yellow with a layer of tulle inside for body. Yellow rhinestone chain was sewed onto the main bodice seams. All of the bows on the bodice and the skirt are gold lace overlaid on gold lame, just like the bodice. Each bow has gold charm trim at the bottom of each bow tail. Each bow tail also has a Preciousa gold irridescent teardrop stone. There’s also a small line of sequined lace standing up around the collar. I also put together some embellishments of faux flowers, gold ribbons and bows on the bodice. The front bodice bow has a vintage gold rose pin. The back of the bodice has gold grommets and laces up. It also has a modesty panel.
The skirt for Belle’s Ballgown costume was basically drafted by figuring out the max circumference at the bottom, and the circumference at the top, and then kinda sorta dividing it into 8 parts (like the cartoon version). The length was, if I remember right, twice the length I wanted for the skirt. Then I made 8 “A” shaped pieces based on those measurements. Then I sewed the 8 pieces together with a long basting stitch and pulled them up to the length I wanted to gather it. I then resewed those seams with a stabilizing stitch. The white net overlay is covered in gold glitter roses laid over the gold skirt and then the waistband put on. All the large bows are done the same way as the bodice front bow. My friend Annie let me bother her tulle petticoat which was worn over a “MEGA FULL 6 HOOP” from angels bridal on ebay.
The base wig for the wig is Newlook June 802. I pulled bangs out of it and hair sprayed them, but this wig is actually pretty easy to get the sort of look I wanted without that much work because of it’s curl. I pulled the hair back and then added a lot of matching ringlet extensions to the wig. Then I added a hair decoration I made out of faux yellow flowers, gold flowers, gold ribbons and gold glitter butterflies, etc.
The gloves are vintage from etsy and have little roses in them. The necklaces are pearl and rhinestone and gold roses and are from forever21. The shoes are gold glittery starbursts on clear vinyl, ” Colorful Creations Women’s Harmony Closed Toe Slingback”.
