Kamikaze Girls is still one of my favorite movies and love Momoko’s wardrobe in it. I made this Kamikaze Girls dress to be a comfy Gothic Lolita style dress that I could wear during pregnancy. It’s based heavily on the Baby, the Stars Shine Bright one that Momoko wears in the Kamikaze Girls (2004 Shimotsuma Monogatari) movie.
It’s a really comfortable dress since it has elastic at the back and the straps and it’s very free from the empire waist. The construction is pretty easy as the skirt is just a big rectangle gathered into the waist. You could use almost any princess seamed sloper or pattern that fits you well to get a head start on this dress’s bodice. Most of the lace is just applied on top except the collar and hem laces. The black ribbons are laced up the front through openings in the white lace.
I chose a medium weight soft cotton from Michael Levine’s and cluny lace from various LA Fabric district stores. The back piece with elastic running through it is just a rectangle. The straps are just rectangles hemmed in lace. There’s a side zipper.
