I fell in love with the costumes in WISH the moment I picked it up. The funny thing is though, that the angels change their outfits in just about every page! Kel, Judy, AJ and I thought it would be fun to take elements of the character designs from WISH (since there were so many) and add together a few of our own ideas and come up with original, but “looking like something right out of the series” costumes. We each chose an angel. Each of the master angels controls an element in the manga, so we centered our design choices around that.
My costume is basically a working mandarin chinese dress pattern that has been somewhat heavily modified. I was inspired a lot by the Volume 4 Cover from WISH, as well as some images of Kohaku and Hisui with gold filigree on their jackets. Hisui frequently wore this type of cut and similar fitted jackets and dresses, so I figured it would work.
I couldn’t find the color of avocado-ish green I wanted, so I bought trim, frogs and bias tape and hand-dyed them to be the color I wanted (to match the skirt.) The skirt also has a dye gradient near the bottom (it gets slightly darker green…) and the white jacket/dress has yellow gradient dyes along the sleeves and tails. The jacket has an intricate hand painted gold design that unfortunately doesnt show up too well in these photos. Judy made the gems for me since I couldn’t get up to TAP plastics in time, none in my area. She also fashioned the backbrace for all of us! Basically, this costume wouldn’t exist without the advice and help of Kel and Judy. XO
The wings are pvc armature with poultry wire on top and either expanding foam or cotton batting covered in muslin, and then covered in feathers. They actually were remarkably light considering their size. The backplate they were attached too however was a bit painful, being held steady by corsets underneath our clothes.
